Likewise, the apostles prayed before they appointed Matthias to be one of their number. Let us, therefore, follow their examples, and offer our prayers to Almighty God in preparation for the Elective Synod of the Diocese of Barbados, April 25, 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>The Consecrating Bishop\u2019s Call to Prayer; BCP p. 432<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;A&nbsp;novena&nbsp;(Latin <strong><em>novem&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>means nine) is a nine-day discipline of constant prayer in imitation of the nine days between the&nbsp;Ascension&nbsp;of&nbsp;Christ&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;Day&nbsp;of&nbsp;Pentecost.&nbsp;During&nbsp;that time the disciples of Jesus &#8220;all joined together constantly in prayer&#8221; (Acts 1:14) In addition to focused prayer, they also&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<br \/>\n\u2022 read and reflected upon Holy Scripture in light of our Lord\u2019s Passion (Acts 1:20)&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u2022 exhibited the unity of the church (Acts 1:14)&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u2022 gathered the believers together in one place, until the total was about 120 (Acts 1:15)&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u2022 identified the primary purpose of the apostolic ministry (Acts 1:22) as witnessing to Christ&#8217;s resurrection&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u2022 held the first Episcopal election, replacing Judas Iscariot&nbsp;with Matthias<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since that time, a nine-day discipline of prayer has come to be associated with Episcopal elections and with any specific need for prayer. Among Roman Catholics the discipline is common and often takes other shapes &#8211; nine hours, nine weeks, or nine months (in imitation of the months our Lord spent in the&nbsp;womb).&nbsp;Regardless&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;duration,&nbsp;the&nbsp;ancient&nbsp;pattern&nbsp;of gathering believers in unity for prayer, scripture, and&nbsp;the invocation of the Holy Spirit for wise decision-making continues to be a vibrant practice in the Church today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The&nbsp;Guild of St. Raphael of the Cathedral Church of St. Michael and all Angels of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Diocese&nbsp;of&nbsp;Barbados therefore invites all those who wish to join together in unity for prayer, as did the first disciples of our Lord, to join us in a sacred novena for the election of the next bishop of the Diocese of Barbados. We commit to pray from April 16 through April 25.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The&nbsp;novena&nbsp;prayers&nbsp;should&nbsp;be&nbsp;prayed&nbsp;daily.&nbsp;They&nbsp;are&nbsp;designed for use by the gathered community and may be added to the Daily Office or used in place of the Prayers of the People at the Holy Eucharist; or they may be used as a private, stand-alone devotion at home or work. A discipline of fasting may be added as desired. Priests are asked to celebrate the Mass with special intention for God\u2019s grace in the election. Each day\u2019s prayer begins with an invocation of the Holy Spirit in the classic hymn \u201cCome Holy Ghost, Our Souls Inspire\u201d \u2013&nbsp;this may be sung or said. A short reading from scripture follows, then prayers which are adapted from the Examination in the liturgy for the Consecration of a Bishop. Each day\u2019s prayers focus on one of nine callings expressed in the Examination; they finish the sentence, \u201cA Bishop is called to\u2026\u201d The novena ends with the Kyrie, the Lord \u2019s Prayer, and the grace. But<br \/>\nJesus called them to him and said, \u201cYou know that the rulers of the<br \/>\nGentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over<br \/>\nthem. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great<br \/>\namong you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first<br \/>\namong you must be&nbsp;your&nbsp;slave;&nbsp;just as the Son of Man came not to<br \/>\nbe served but to serve, and to give his life a&nbsp;ransom for many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Prayers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The prayers are led by an Officiant, and the people respond.<br \/>\nO Crucified Lord, who considered equality with God not to be<br \/>\nsomething to be seized, but humbled yourself even to death on a<br \/>\ncross: hear our prayers for the next bishop of the Diocese of<br \/>\nBarbados.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Give him your Spirit of humility and holiness, for as God always<br \/>\nresists the proud, even so He gives ever more grace to the humble.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em><strong>Lord, hear our prayer.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Strengthen our bishop\u2019s&nbsp;prayers, O God, making him always<br \/>\nsensitive to the lead of your Spirit. Give him&nbsp;grace, in a busy<br \/>\nschedule, never to forsake his discipline of prayer or his rule&nbsp;of life.<br \/>\n<em><strong>Lord, hear our prayer.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Care closely, O Lord, for our bishop\u2019s wife and family. Surround<br \/>\nthem with loving care on every side. Protect them from emotional<br \/>\nwounds as they do the work to which you call them; and deliver<br \/>\nthem from all the assaults of the enemy. Empower them to forgive<br \/>\nand be forgiven. Faithful in the bonds of holy matrimony, make<br \/>\ntheir love a clear sign of Christ\u2019s&nbsp;love for the church. Grow their<br \/>\nfaith as they grow up into a perfect likeness of you.<br \/>\n<em><strong>Lord, hear our prayer.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As&nbsp;our&nbsp;bishop&nbsp;spends&nbsp;his&nbsp;life,&nbsp;labor,&nbsp;and&nbsp;energy&nbsp;in&nbsp;upholding our<br \/>\nsouls, O God, send him powerful renewal and welcome refreshment<br \/>\nwhen he needs it. Keep his body, soul, and mind in health and&nbsp;soundness.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Lord, hear our prayer.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Officiant<\/em><\/strong>:&nbsp;Lord, have mercy upon us.<br \/>\n<em><strong>People:<\/strong><\/em> Christ, have mercy upon us.<br \/>\nOfficiant:&nbsp;Lord, have mercy upon us.<\/p>\n<p>Our Father, who art in heaven;<br \/>\nHallowed be thy name,&nbsp;Thy kingdom come,&nbsp;<br \/>\nThy will be done<br \/>\nOn earth as it is in heaven.<br \/>\nGive us this day our daily bread,&nbsp;<br \/>\nAnd forgive us our trespasses&nbsp;<br \/>\nAs we forgive those who trespass against us.&nbsp;<br \/>\nAnd lead us not into temptation<br \/>\nBut deliver us from evil.<br \/>\nFor thine is the kingdom and the power and the&nbsp;glory<br \/>\nFor ever and ever. <strong>Amen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Officiant:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be&nbsp;with us all evermore. &nbsp;<strong>Amen&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wednesday, April 25<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The Day of the election<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The people of God\u2019s holy Church are called to discern who God is calling to the ministry of bishop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hymn<\/strong>: <strong><em>Come, Holy Ghost, Our Souls Inspire<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading: Acts 1:15-17, 21-26<\/strong><br \/>\nIn those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, \u201cFriends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry \u2026So one of the men who have<br \/>\naccompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among&nbsp;us,&nbsp;beginning&nbsp;from&nbsp;the&nbsp;baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us \u2014one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.\u201d So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, \u201cLord, you know everyone\u2019s&nbsp;heart.
