Welcome to the Sunday School Corner. You are at the right place if you are looking for anything to do with the Sunday School of the St. Michael’s Cathedral. Here is some important information:
The Sunday School’s meeting time
The Sunday School of the Cathedral Church of St. Michael and All Angels meets every Sunday during the 9 o’clock service except on the 1st Sunday in the month or on Festival Sundays. During the singing of the gradual hymn the children leave the church and proceed to the church house for their corporate session. The numbers attending Sunday school are at an average of about 20 students per Sunday from a total roll which could amount to about 60. The Sunday School is administered by a superintendent who is assisted by 5 teachers and 2 assistants.
Mrs HarriettBlackman (BA, Dip. Ed., Cert. Ed.) – Sunday School superintendent started to assist with teaching of Sunday School classes back in 1972 while still being a Sunday School student herself. She has remained with the Sunday School from that time to the present, moving from teacher to superintendent. She succeeded the late Molly Southwell who was a strong advocate for the empowerment of children. Harriett herself likes to give the children opportunities to express themselves no matter how young they may be. She enjoys instructing the children in the Christian way of life and has recognised this as her calling. Harriett was selected to represent the Diocese of Barbados at the meeting of the Christian Education Committee of the Province of the West Indies. She is also the coordinator of the superintendents in the St. Michael’s Deanery. Her vocational training has enhanced her directing of the Sunday School as she is a trained teacher of over 35 years’ experience and a Head of Department.
Harriett’s goal is to guide the children in the Sunday school to become model citizens by instilling in them Christian morals and values following the doctrine of the Anglican church.
The Sunday school instruction is based on the gospel reading for that day and this is facilitated by an online site found at sermons4kids.com which presents the lesson along with materials suitable for children.
The corporate session involves prayers, reading and explanation of the lesson, notices and singing of choruses and or hymns. This session also includes the completion of tasks, in age groupings, from the materials related to the lesson.
The Sunday school follows the regular calendar of the church, acknowledging all the Church’s Seasons, festivals, celebrations and events. The children also make tangible contributions where possible. They play an active part in the reading of the lessons on the first Sunday in each month and are also assigned to take up the collection on these Sundays.
Aims of the Sunday School:
- To promote understanding and appreciation of the Holy Scriptures.
- To help children grow in their ability to respond to the Word of God in faith and in love.
- To help children understand the faith of the Church.

Second Sunday after Lent
This week‘s title is – Playing for Keeps
The theme is: What does it profit if a man gains the whole world and loses his soul?
Scripture: Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Mark 8:34-36
In our Bible lesson today, Jesus said that if we want to be real winners we must be willing to give up everything and follow him. When we follow Jesus, we may not have a lot of the things that some people think are important. We may not live in a big house or drive a fancy car, but we will have something that is much better than that, we will have treasures laid up for us in heaven.
When we get to heaven, there will be a mansion waiting for us to move in and we will walk around on streets of gold. Best of all, we will have everlasting life with Jesus. You see, when we give our lives to Jesus, HE “plays for keeps.”
Your task this week is to focus on living a life for Jesus.
